Erddig Hall and Country Park

Bryn Goleu, Erddig

Bryn Goleu tenement

In 1716 Bryn Golan (now known as Bryn Goleu tenement), which is located on the left hand side of the road when entering the park from Hafod Road, was leased for life to the 81-year-old Frances Williams. The lease included ‘some duties of work in harvest, some coal carrying and the keeping of a dog’. The 34 acre plot cost £10 a year to rent.

The sixteenth century house that came with it can still be seen today, but it has been substantially altered since 1715 by the addition of a bay, dormer and oriel windows and a two-storey wing.

The house has been occupied by a wide variety of tenants. At the end of the eighteenth century, Robert Lloyd, a retired London grocer, was living there. In the mid-nineteenth century it was rented to a Sarah Matthews, along with Hafo-y-Bwch farm, for £214 per annum.
